Google has started a new project named OpenSocial. OpenSocial is a set of common APIs for developers to create applications that work on websites like Orkut, Facebook etc. that have chosen to participate.
The much awaited Orkut applications are now live. For now, these applications are available only to Ethiopian Orkut members. But don't worry, you can still get them.
Follow the steps below:
* Change the country in your profile to Estonia.
* Now, you'll will get an option to 'add apps' in the left hand side menu.
* Click on the option. Now you'll be in the application directory. Choose the application you want to try.
For now, these are some of the available apps -
1. PhotoAttack
2. Horoscopes
3. Emote!
4. Music iLike
5. JogaTV by Nike
6. Top Friends by Slide.com
There are not much apps on Orkut at the present moment but you will see many more in the time to come. So just wait and watch.

Yahoo! enters the social networking arena
Yahoo! has finally stepped into the shoes of social networking websites and has launched its own exclusive social network which is known as the Yahoo! Mash.
Modules are basically the widgets you can add to pimp out your page. Yahoo’s modules include Flickr RSS, Ego Boost, Common Friends, MyMoshLog2, Blog Module, Asteroids, Astrology, PimpMyPet, Hover, Kaleidescope, Guestbook, and My Stuff. The modules can be loaded onto your profile page and moved around using drag-and-drop
The profile page gives you a wide array of options to play with and edit like - your photo, friend list, tags, about me, modules (widgets), Blurts (status messages) and a guestbook.
Wiki-friends is where users are encouraged to edit each other’s pages and create new pages for friends. Every time you visit your profile page, you will see new modules which your friends loaded for you.
Blurt is a Yahoo! Mash Module which will let you add announcements to your Profile page. The My Stuff module is a very good and handy module that will allow you to interact with your friends. You paste HTML snippets there which includes Flash Games, YouTube videos and other miscellaneous interactive content. Tags module is used to tag your profile with the most relevant keywords and The Mash Pet is a funny new way to express your mood to others who visit your profile.
Pulse is a feature which takes you to a page which compiles updates and blurts from all your friends. Whether they added a new friend or added a new module… it’s all reported here.
Overall, Mash is Yahoo’s latest attempt at social networking and still needs some work. It’s currently in BETA. It will surely get a lot of early adopters and members purely based on it’s Yahoo! brand and existing Yahoo loyalists will like the idea of their own network to hang out in.Keep an eye on the official Yahoo! Mash Blog which will enlist the updates and will inform you about the latest feature and system updates.

The scripts in these hacks require Firefox. Firefox is a free web-browsing program similar to Internet Explorer with additional security features and options.
After you install Firefox, you’ll need Greasemonkey. Greasemonkey is a Firefox extension which lets you to add bits of DHTML (”user scripts”) to any web page to change its behavior .

After you’ve installed Firefox and Greasemonkey, you can install these scripts:
- AutoLogin: Facebook autologin automatically logs you in to Facebook (it stops asking you to log in every time!)
- Change the color of Facebook: This script changes the default color of your Facebook. By modifying the code you can make it whatever color scheme you want.
Tiled Friends View :
Did you know it's possible to view all your friends at once in a big, tiled mosaic format ? It's also very simple! Here is how to do it -
1.) Go to MY FRIENDS on the main Facebook menu on the top/left of the page.
2.) From the "SHOW" drop-down menu in the top/left, select the dashed lines "—-"
3.) DONE!!
NOTE: If you have A LOT of friends, it might take a little while to load up as it shows ALL of your friends at once.
Which Facebook Member Are You ?
It's possible to find out which Facebook member number you are, and also how many people use Facebook at your school.
There's a simple method to find out:
1.) Identify your Facebook ID.
This is a 7-digit number you can view in the URL box of your browser by clicking "My Profile" or clicking on one of your friends profile.
It should look like this:
2.) Compare several Facebook ID numbers.
Get two or three Facebook ID numbers and find the COMMON NUMBER, this will be your school's ID code. For example, The Univeristy of Texas has a school code 79.
3.) DONE!
Once you know the school code, the remaining numbers are your Facebook signup number. So in the example above, the numbers would be like this:
7949314 = The 49,314th person to sign up at UT.
7920636 = The 20,636th person to sign up at UT.
7921677 = The 21,677th person to sign up at UT.
Add images and videos in Orkut scraps
Orkut has been tweaking and adding new features from time to time, some of the most awaited features included adding images and videos in the Orkut scraps, or in short sending multimedia scraps. Ant at last Orkut came with something like that, now you can easily make your scrap multimediac and you don’t even need to re-invent the wheel for that.
1. Adding images to Orkut scraps
Copy and paste urls ending in .jpg, .gif, .png or .bmp and the image will appear in the scrap.
For example, http://abcdegf.com/xyz.jpg .
Orkut will automatically parse these links into the live images. This was awaited from long back.
2. Adding videos from Youtube and Google Videos
Copy and paste the url and the video will appear in the scrap. For example, http://youtube.com/watch? v=xbfgs78 > Google is way too smart, they are integrating all their tols together. Though Google videos has been offered now.
3. Adding sound files and songs
Copy and paste the url of an audio file and an audio player will appear in the scrap. For example, http://abcdegh.com/xyzpqr.mp3. I liked this feature the most.
4. Adding html-embeddable objects
Um .. not sure if too many people will be able to utilize this feature because the HTML people are only limited. Nice feature for web savvy Orkutters by the way. You just need to paste the html embed code in Orkut scraps to share it with your friends.

Orkut, the social networking site has now got a totally new look. The site has come up with several changes since its inception.
The new site design is really cool ! Google has kept the true blue look with Orkut . The menus , colours , sidebar and mostly everything has been given a stylish touch . The new interface is sleak and much more appealing . The navigation seems to be much more easier .

Orkut Auto-Spam Deleter
Here is a cool greasemonkey script to automatically detect and remove spam from your owned Orkut communities.
This script can make your job of moderating a lot more easier as it automatically searches and prompts you to delete almost all spam messages, saving you a lot of your time in finding and deleting them.
Assuming that you have firefox and greasemonkey extension already installed, you can install install the script from here .
After installing the script simply go to your community, and click on “view all topics” button.
The script will start searching for spam messages and prompt you to delete if it finds any.
